About Us

The Gazette has been an integral part of Colorado Springs virtually since the community's founding. Its roots can be traced to city founder General William Jackson Palmer's weekly Out West, which began publishing in March 23, 1872.

R.C. Hoiles, founder of Freedom Newspapers Inc., purchased the newspaper in 1946. His son, Harry, was named publisher, a position he held until 1975. In 1957, the newspaper moved to its current location at 30 S. Prospect St.

Freedom Communications acquired the Colorado Springs Sun, a competing daily newspaper owned by Oklahoma Publishing Co., in 1986 and shut its doors. Since then, The Gazette has been the only locally produced daily newspaper serving the Colorado Springs area.

The Gazette employs some 475 full-time and part-time associates, all having an integral part in publishing the daily core product as well as other printed publications and interactive services. It contracts with an independent carrier force of more than 250 to deliver the newspaper.

Our company was founded on a libertarian philosophy that is reflected in our opinion editorial pages. We believe in individual freedom and responsibility - in the right of all individuals everywhere to control themselves and all they produce.

With a daily circulation of 98,069, The Gazette reaches 48 percent of the market. Sunday circulation is 109,593 with a healthy market penetration of 60 percent. In addition, The Gazette owns the number 1 and number 2 websites in the market, gazette.com and ColoradoSprings.com.

As a committed community partner, The Gazette has a long history of giving back through civic investment. The goal is to support efforts aimed not only at sustaining a special quality of life, but improving upon it. Through these endeavors, Gazette Charities, a 501c3 public charity, provides hope and assistance to thousands of individuals and families by encouraging self-sufficiency and self-responsibility through community-based philanthropy.
