Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to oversee content for multiple print products, vibrant websites, and a weekday television newscast. While we prefer that you bring newsroom management experience, if you are an experienced reporter or recent Journalism grad, this could be your chance to step up to a leadership role. Your success here could set you up to pursue career multiple paths in our parent corporation, Freedom Communications, Inc., one of the largest media corporations in the US. If you're not familiar with the Clovis, NM area, we enjoy all the amenities of a smaller community, including a cost of living lower than the national average.

You will oversee all non-advertising content for multiple products, including assigning reporters and editing stories. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have outstanding writing and copyediting skills and experience as a reporter; experience as an editor is preferred. We're looking for a journalist with a broad view to see the multimedia opportunities in each story (online, photos, sidebars, etc). You also will need the ability to lead and coach others, and a team player approach to working collegially and earning respect at all levels of the organization.

Freedom New Mexico, including the Clovis News Journal, Portales News-Tribune, and Quay County Sun, is a strong news organization now, routinely winning the top awards from New Mexico Press Association, New Mexico AP and Panhandle Press Association in Texas. Two years ago we snared the top news writing prize from Best of the West, beating entries from The Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City and The News Tribune in Tacoma, WA. But we want to be even better, and you'll help make that happen.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A broad knowledge of newsroom operations, including general familiarity with all positions, including reporting and writing, copyediting, photography, and the Web.
  • An exceptional command of spelling and grammar, as well as appropriate news style writing.
  • Typing skills and familiarity with text editing programs such as News Edit Pro IQ, graphics programs such as Quark Xpress and Photoshop, and MS Office software.
  • The ability to:
    • Communicate effectively and persuasively with newsroom staff members.
    • Solve problems and make judgments autonomously.
    • Analyze and interpret the most complex documents.
    • Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
    • Compose articles using original or innovative techniques/styles.
    • Make persuasive speeches and present controversial and/or complex topics to top management, groups or boards.
    • Compute formulas, such as tax rates, assessments, etc.
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.

What's in It for You

Professional growth -- with hands-on involvement in all of the newsroom's content-related activities (and probably some beyond that as well), you'll deepen your experience in traditional, online, and broadcast journalism, and broaden your leadership and management skills.

Career development -- whether you have newsroom leadership experience or you've just earned your journalism degree, you can make a name for yourself in New Mexico and then pursue other opportunities within Freedom, such as positions at the Orange County Register.

High impact -- yes, these are smaller newspapers, but if you're a good fit for this role you see the opportunity to make a broad impact on our operations, the professional development of your staff, and our future growth. For example, we're exploring new media products all the time; we're already making extensive use of video, and we're working on initiatives such as email alerts sent directly to cell phones.

Excellent compensation -- we offer a competitive salary, bonus potential, and pay-for-performance incentives, as well as a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and life insurance; a 401(k) plan; and more.

The Clovis/Portales News Scene

"Tornado kills two, damages 500 buildings . . . Special Ops military forces move in . . . Convicted killer still free after jailbreak . . ."

You've seen the headlines. Think you can lead the coverage on the national news events that keep breaking in our back yard? We promise plenty of news worth gathering: Special Ops moving into nearby Cannon Air Force Base over the next two years; Extreme weather conditions -- shorts and sandals on Christmas Eve, maybe a spring break blizzard, but the recent killer tornado was our first in 100 years; And a county jail that just can't seem to contain violent bad guys -- we're still missing a convicted killer and a murder suspect, in case you missed it on "America's Most Wanted" TV show.

It's a great place to live, too. Clovis is a retail and service hub for a 75 mile radius. We're in the heart of cattle country, with a strong ranching and farming industry. Located about two hours from Amarillo or Lubbock, TX, we're also three or four hours from fishing, skiing, and other outdoor activities, including eight state parks and one national monument. Portales is home to Eastern New Mexico University, offering athletics such as football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball, and high school football and basketball are a big part of life here. Relocation assistance is available.

More About Your Role

Reporting to the Editor, Freedom New Mexico, you will lead and manage a staff of 10 divided between the Clovis News Journal and Portales News-Tribune, the two daily papers. There is a Senior Reporter at the News-Tribune who oversees that team but reports to you, and you'll oversee about seven at the News Journal. All these reporters wear multiple hats -- videographer, photographer, sports writer, and more.

In a nutshell you will be the news/sports department manager, generating, compiling, and presenting non-advertising content in multiple products. We also have a Design Managing Editor, a peer with whom you will collaborate. You can expect to invest the majority of your time identifying stories, assigning reporters, and editing content. We also air a two-minute TV newscast every day, and you will plan and either write or edit that content.

Pivotal to your success will be your ability to see the multimedia potential in every story, and project what we will do with that information across all our products. You'll need to be constantly asking questions such as: what will it look like online (we publish online first, then transfer that content to print)? What video and photos do we need? What sidebars and breakout information can we develop? Another key focus for you will be developing your staff, most of whom are fairly new to the news game.

More specifically, your activities will include:
  • Directing and overseeing news and sports content.
  • Supervising the hiring, training, promotion and termination of newsroom associates.
  • Exercising responsibility for fairness, timeliness, thoroughness and accuracy of news/sports coverage in print and online.
  • Working with the Editor to formulate and develop news department goals and objectives, as approved by the publisher.
  • Seeking out and providing training opportunities for newsroom staff.
  • Providing direction to newsroom associates in matters of libel and Freedom of Information.
  • Serving as liaison with the general public and representing the newspaper to the community as required.
  • Working with the Editor and employees to accomplish the mission of the newspaper.
  • Staying abreast of major news/sports developments at local, state and national level, and encouraging stories that present a local perspective on the issues.
  • Serving as liaison with contracted content providers and professional associations as requested.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will remain focused on upholding the company's core values and providing superior customer service, both externally and internally. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Content Managing Editor, you will:
  • Be a proactive and willing mentor whenever possible.
  • Achieve your goals independently, but also know when to bring major issues to the Editor's attention.
  • Bring strong self-motivation and a drive to achieve results.
  • Manage multiple activities and competing priorities effectively.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
